Disclaimer: Yeah, I know. Joss and his band of fiends *ahem* I mean friends keep Giles on a
short chain. But I own everyone else. And we've got a set of bolt cutters.
Feedback: Please. All flamers however will be lined up and stooge slapped.
Note: In this one we get to find out a little more about Sarah and Giles pasts (Is that a
word?), what Wendy's problem is, and finally who Sarah is supposed to heal. (As if you
      couldn't guess.)
I want to add a special thank you! Thank you! To Gabi for her help with the German. He...it was
perfect.

"Came to see how the lass is doin'"
Giles didn't even look up from the archive he'd been reading. "She's sleeping right now. The
last of the stitches came out today. Otherwise no change."
It had been a week since Sarah had been out of the hospital, three since the attack. So that
she'd have someone to look after her, it had been decided that she would stay at Giles flat.
Sarah's memory still had not returned and Giles was getting desperate for a way to bring back
the woman he loved. That he had finally admitted it to himself seemed to ease some of his
automatic guilt that it was somehow his fault. But it still hurt him to the core that Sarah
didn't even show a trace of her old self.
"If ye could figure out what got her to lock away her memories, maybe ye could bring em back."
Ian suggested as he picked up a box off one of the shelves.
"I've thought of that. I just can't figure out how to accomplish it. Do be careful with that
box. Some of those crystals are hard to replace."
Ian set the box of colourful stones down next to Giles and started to examine them one by one.
"Ye sure do have a lot of these pretty rocks. What do they do?"
"Different things depending on what kind it is." Giles saw which one Ian was playing with and
was hit by another pang of guilt, remembering the last time he had used that particular one.
"Was there anything else you wanted, Ian?"
The Scotsman set the crystal down on the table. "No. Just seein' if there was anything I could
do to help the lass. I'll come by later." And with that, he turned and left.
Giles stared at the door for a moment, then to the crystal, the light he was reading by
reflecting off the little flaw inside it. Then an idea began to form in his mind.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sarah wasn't quite sure she'd be much help when Mr. Giles asked her to help catalogue his
crystals, but she felt that she should at least try. He was after all helping her. All she had
to do was tell him what colour they were and if there were any flaws in them. Things were
going along fairly well until she came across one that try as she might, she couldn't quite
seem to focus on.
"Try looking deeper into it" Giles suggested. Doing as he said, she started slipping into a
trance.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giles watched her go under and sighed. Hopefully this time the results would be better than
when he had hypnotized Buffy. Should Sarah need help, he also had ready a gypsy spell, that he
and Sarah had studied before, so that he could join minds with her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sarah found herself back in her garden. Only something was different. It felt less safe than
before. The shadows seemed deeper and she felt as if something were watching her.
"Hello my lovely." She spun around to face the source of the voice. Standing before her was a
man. But something about him was not quite right. His face had too many angles and his teeth
looked more like fangs.
'Vampire' her brain told her and suddenly she found herself holding a stake. As the man lunged
for her, she instinctively held the stake up and tried to aim for his heart. He knocked her to
the ground and sat on her, pulling a knife from thin air.
"Time to finish what we started." he hissed. Somehow Sarah found the strength to push him off.
Before he could get off the ground, she thrust the stake into his chest, turning him into dust.
She heard someone clapping.
"Bravo" Looking up she saw another man. This one looked like a man, except that he was huge.
Looming over her, the man said, "Come on. Don't tell me you've forgotten your 'Uncle Chuck'.
I think you need some 'special attention' to remind you." and grabbed for her. Sarah dodged the
mammoth hand. There was something she was supposed to say that would send him away, but she
couldn't remember what it was. As he grabbed for her again, she realized that this could be a
fight to the death. And if it were her death, she'd never get back to where she belonged.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giles watched her with some concern. Whatever she was struggling with was strong and she was
starting to wear down. Her breathing was coming in short gasps and she was beginning to twitch.
Without thinking he started to recite the spell, his fear for her making the German it was
written in sound even harsher.
"Ich bin eins mit Dir. Du bist eins mit Mir. Zusammen kÖnnen wir alle bekÄmpfen. Mein Herz mit
Deinem. Ich bin hier." (I am one with you. You are one with me. Together we can fight all. My
heart with yours. I am here.)
Giles suddenly found himself in a garden. Sarah was standing there looking at something he
couldn't quite see. As he drew closer, he saw that she was crying. He pulled her into his arms
to comfort her.
She sobbed into his chest, saying, "I couldn't stop him."
Giles looked over to see what appeared to be a man stabbing a child while another lay in a
bloody heap nearby. With a start he realized the one that was lying alone was Sarah and she
was watching her sister being killed by the man. Suddenly he had a flash of memory and the
man became a vampire. It was no longer Sarah watching but him, from under the bed as his father
staked it. And the dying child was his sister, Beth. He had forgotten about the death of his
own sister the hands of the vampire that had killed his father's slayer. He then realized he
had been made to forget by his father. With the same crystal he himself used on Buffy And now
Sarah. It explained part of why he had felt the need to rebel against his father. And his
destiny. If life was so cheap that a sister could be purged from you, he had wanted to feel as
much as possible before they took it away. That's what Ethan had offered.
'It explains a lot.' He heard and realized that Sarah had shared the memory with him.
As if that opened the floodgates, they both stared into each other's eyes as their memories
merged and swirled around them. Everything that had happened to make them who they were, was
laid open.
Sarah cried with Giles as he waited for the ambulance to come for Jenny. He shared her horror at
finding out she could no longer have children after her husband had pushed her down the stairs
in her sixth month of pregnancy, denying that child and any future ones a chance at life. It
all came in a rush that left them breathless.
When it finally ended, they found themselves thrown back into realty, sitting across from each
other in Giles' flat, staring into each other's eyes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sarah wasn't sure who had made the first move, but she suddenly found herself kissing Giles as
he pulled her gently onto his lap. With release of her memories came a need that she couldn't
deny. As she kissed him she started to unbutton his shirt and run her hands across his chest.
When he tried to pull away, she stopped him.
"Please Giles. I love you. I need you."
When he started to protest saying "Your injuries...I don't' want to hurt you." Sarah shushed him.
"So we'll go easy. There'll be plenty of time for hard later." She wiggled in his lap "Although
hard is trying to make its presence known." She giggled as she kissed him again. When they came
up for air she whispered, "Please Giles. I need this. Now."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later, Giles thought she had fallen asleep and was about to do the same when he heard her say
his name.
"Yes, luv?" he answered.
"After everything that's happened, I've realized something."
"What's that, luv?" "I only want to think about the future. You know why?"
"Why?"
"Because the past bites."
Giles chuckled and turned to her "Yes it does, luv. And you know what?"
"What?"
"So do I." And nibbled on her ear.
End The Past Bites.
