Rating: PG
Spoilers:This is my version of what the show "Ripper" might be like, so Season 6, after that it's AU.
Disclaimer: Giles is owned by Joss and his cohorts. I think his flat may be too. Everyone
else is mine to do with as I see fit. Don't worry. They all care about Giles and
won't hurt him, unless he wants them too.
Feedback: Sure why not. All flamers, however, will be boiled in their own Christmas pudding.
Note: This is my first ever fic. In fact my first story ever to escape from my brain. So all
suggestions will be considered. And maybe even used.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The owner of the house, whose name was Josiah Watley, was a middle-aged widower.
"I bought the house, after my Edith died so that my son and his family could live with me.
After about a month we started to notice little things. Items disappearing, only to be found
in someplace we'd already looked. Furniture moved around a little. Then Tom's little girl,
Emmy, started to talk to someone she called Winnie. All she'd tell us was that Winnie lived in
the attic. Then the fires started. Little ones at first. Then, it was like the fire was coming
out of the air and landing on things. We had the vicar come by and bless the house and that
seemed to calm things down. But about a fortnight ago, Emmy started to have really horrible
nightmares. She said Winnie had started staying in her room to keep the monster away, but he
was too big and gave her bad dreams. After that it's like all hell broke loose. Things would
move. We'd hear talking in empty rooms. The fires started to become worse. Then the night
afore last, Tom's wife, Cass, started screaming that she saw Emmy's monster. And she's a hard
woman to scare. I still laugh to think how she took a skillet to one of Tom's friends for not
watching his tongue around Emmy." He chuckled for a moment, then as if to remind them of why
they were here, the smell of smoke came floating into the room.
That's when Giles noticed that Sarah wasn't there.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She had been trying to listen to what Mr. Watley was saying, but she kept hearing someone
calling her name. Not loud, almost in a pained whisper. "sarah...sarah" it always seemed to be
right near her and yet she couldn't say exactly where it was coming from. It led her through
the house to a child's room. There on the bed was a woman who, though she seemed solid
enough, was dressed in out of date clothes so that Sarah was sure she was a ghost.
"You must be Winnie." Sarah smiled.
"They told me you were coming." Winnie answered.
"Who?"
Winnie looked towards the ceiling and smiled.
"Oh. Did they tell you anything else?"
"Yes. That you and your friends could help the family here. You see my time grows short and
I've use too much of my power against him. Soon I won't have enough strength left to keep them
safe."
Sarah didn't care for the sound of that. "Safe from what?"
"He was a good man once. Then he fell in with those bastards. Oh, pardon my language."
'A polite ghost. Heh, Who knew." Sarah thought. "Who is it? And why does he want to hurt them?"
she added aloud.
Winnie lowered her gaze. "My husband. He made a deal with the devil. That's the only way I can
explain it. When we married he was the most gentle and loving man. Then, he started to go to
the pub and stay out all hours. Said he was trying to make things better for us. He became
violent and nothing I could do would stop him."
Sarah touched a small scar by her left eye. "I can relate to that" she murmured. Louder she
asked "So how did you end up here? Now?"
"He accused me of sleeping with the vicar. The vicar of all people! Then he struck me, and
the next thing I knew, I was here, and a little girl was saying hello to me. I've since found
out that Martin killed me that night and hid my body on the moor. Then he killed himself."
"Why is he after the family that lives here now?"
"Emmy is the reincarnation of the child I was carrying when I died. Martin feels that she
should not have been allowed to live and will do anything to take her away."
Sarah suddenly felt the temperature in the room drop to where she could see her breath. Winnie
jumped up and, with a scared look, shouted, "He's coming. You must leave! He will hurt you too
if he finds out why you're here."
"No." said Sarah softly, "I've spent my life scared of people like that and I'm not going to do
it anymore. Especially not if another child is going to get hurt because I was to scared to
help them." At that moment the door slammed shut.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giles heard voices coming down the stairs and, following them, had just reached the door of
Emmy's room, when it slammed in his face. When he tried the knob, it turned, but the door
wouldn't open.
"Sarah!" he yelled pounding on the door. Just then Ian and Wendy came up behind him.
"What's going on?" Wendy asked, sounding worried.
"The EMF readings are goin' bonkers!" Ian said with growing excitement in his voice.
"I heard Sarah talking to someone and just as I got here the door slammed shut and won't
open." Giles said as he continued to try and open the door.
Ian started jumping around "She's made contact and we weren't there to see it?!" and he too
started putting his weight into opening the door. Just then a crash was heard from the room
and the door flew open just as Sarah delivered a roundhouse kick that rivaled one of Buffy's
to a man who was trying to get ahold of her. When her foot sailed right through him, she
changed tactics and started to shout at him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Sarah realized that physical force wasn't going to do anything against an angry ghost she
decided to try and use his anger against him. Remembering what Winnie said about strength, she
thought, 'Maybe if I get him angry enough, he'll burn himself out.' Faintly she heard Giles
start to recite something in another language. 'Hope I can buy him time to finish it. Here
goes nothing.' "Ooh, mister tough guy, can only pick on women and kids. Oh wait don't forget
the tired old men who can't defend themselves." The ghost suddenly tossed a fireball at her.
"Ooh, do I get the whole floor show or is that all you can do. Why don't you try picking on
someone your own size? Wuss." The room started shaking. "Please my grandma can do better than
that. What are you? A man or a mouse." She started to have to dodge the toys that were being
flung at her. " I get it now. You're a coward. You can't fight anyone who might kick your ass,
so you do stupid things to people who are smaller than you. I'll bet you couldn't get it up
eith-" Sarah was stunned for a moment by a jewelry box as it glanced off her forehead.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giles finished the banishing spell just as a small jewelry box hit Sarah and knocked her back a
bit. A fierce whirlwind started to blow through the room. As it did so, the ghost suddenly
changed form, revealing the demon he really was.
"You think you can send me away little man!' and started to go for Giles. When Sarah saw that,
she shouted "NO!" moving as if to push him, and he suddenly flew back into the tempest Giles
had created. The demon gave a howl of rage and as the wind centered around him and started to
tear him apart, he bellowed, "You haven't seen the last of me little girl. I WILL find a way to
get my revenge!" then he disappeared and the wind ceased.
Giles went over to Sarah, and pulling out his handkerchief, started to dab at the trickle of
blood coming from where the box had hit her.
"That was the best thing, I've ever seen!" hollered Ian as he danced around with excitement.
"Ye really gave 'im whatfor didn't ye!"
"Bloody stupid, I think," said Wendy.
"I have to agree. That was very dangerous." Giles added. He started to say something else but
stopped as Sarah suddenly stiffened, and collapsed in his arms.
